Non-AAARI News: 9/14: No Sense of Closure for Many South Asians a Decade After 9/11

NEW YORK: On the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the South Asian diaspora in the United States continue to grapple with the repercussions that emanated and continue to haunt to this day. Like the issue of racism that never went away despite the abolition of slavery, and
African Americans feel victimized to this day, it is now an established fact that the attacks of 10 years ago carved a new identity — loaded with suspicion — for the Brown people residing in this country.

"I feel humble and honored," said Wong, 63, a gray-haired Vietnam vet with an easy smile. "I really don't feel different. I'm still me - I want to do my utmost to help however I can."

During the Vietnam War, that meant working undercover for the Army as a Chinese language expert. Later, in New York, it meant helping Chinatown recover from the upheaval of 9/11.

Now that Wong is the legion's first-ever Asian-American National Commander, it means lobbying President Obama to create jobs for soldiers returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Non-AAARI News: 9/14: American Jobs Act: Impact on AAPIs and Economy

The American Jobs Act reflects a commitment to strengthen the recovery and help increase access to jobs for all Americans. With nationwide unemployment at an unacceptably high rate – and at least 235,000 Asian American and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) out of work for more than six months – the President believes that inaction is not an option. That’s why the President is putting out a plan to increase the pace of job creation, and why he is committed to fighting for Congress to act on this plan.

Non-AAARI Events: 9/23-25: Performance - Medea

Satoshi Miyagi, celebrated Artistic Director of SPAC and successor to the legendary director Tadashi Suzuki, transforms the Greek masterpiece Medea into a play-within-a-play set in a late 19th-century traditional Japanese restaurant where male members of the establishment call upon the female waitresses for entertainment. Performed to live musical accompaniment, Miyagi's Medea is a visual feast comparable to a kabuki play. With his signature bunraku puppet theater -inspired style that utilizes two actors per role--one to speak and one to move--Miyagi reveals Euripides' poignant story through the lens of Japan's imperialist and male-dominated Meiji era. New Yorkers will finally be introduced to this stunning and internationally acclaimed production, which has traveled to 20 cities and 11 countries since its premiere in 1999.

Non-AAARI Events: 9/13: Artist Talk with Xu Bing

Originally created in 2004 in Cardiff, Wales, this project utilizes the dust that the artist collected from the streets of Lower Manhattan in the aftermath of 9/11. Recreating a field of dust across a floor surface, punctuated by the outline of a Zen Buddhist poem, the work explores the relationship between the material and the spiritual world, and the complicated circumstances created by different world perspectives.
