B: Ngaw geew Alex. Nay ah? (I’m called Alex, and you?)

A: Ngaw geew_____, hung wui. (I’m called______, it’s a pleasure)

B: Nay joe mut hong gah (What’s your occupation?)

A: Ngaw hye seen song lay gah, nay ah? (I’m a teacher and you?)   B: Ngaw______. (I _______.)

A: Daw mm chaw ah / Gay ho ah (Not Bad/Pretty Good)

Lesson 2 (People, Friends & Family)

Practice
A. Nay yuw gay daw gaw hing dye gee mui gah? (How many siblings do you have?)

B. Ngaw yuw som gaw sye lo, lerng gaw dai lo, lerng gaw mui mui tung my som gaw jeah jeah. Nay ah? (I have 3 younger brothers, 2 older brothers, 2 younger sisters and 3 older sisters. And you?)

A. Wah! Ngaw mut yea daw mo ah, don hye ngaw yuw yut gaw lo duw. (Gosh! I don’t have anything, but I do have a father.)

B. Daw ok la. Ngaw gaw lo duw hey Jung Gawk ah. (That’s ok. My father is in China)

A. Herng Jung Gawk daw gay ho ah, mm sye tang keuy cho huirn ba bye. (In China, it’s not too bad, you don’t have to listen to him yell and complain)

B. Nay yuw mo gow chaw ah, gum gawng yeah geh? Yun day yerng dai nay, nay sick keuy, juir keuy. (What the $%&#!? How can you say that? That person raised you, he fed you and you lived off of him.)

A. Gum deem guy nay gawng nay gaw lo duw hey Jung Gawk nay gaw yerng gum hoy sum geh? (Then why when you said your father was in China, you looked so happy?)

Lesson 3 (Numbers & Basic Calculations)

Practice
A. Lee bo cheah hye lerng dun, look bok bong, som deem mm on cee. (This car weighs 2 tons, 600lbs and 3.5oz)

B. Nay da peah pie yuw bok fun gee guw sup guw gaw gay wui nay wui yang. (In playing cards you have a 99% chance of winning.)

A. Nay lee dee choy deem my gah? (How much are these vegetables?/How do you sell these vegetables?)

B. Som bong juw mm gaw boon, yut bong juw lerng mun. (3 pounds for $5.50, 1 pound for $2.)

A. Gum gwye geh? Haw mm haw yee som bong mm ho gee ah? (So expensive? How about 50¢ for 3lbs.?)

B. Nay chee seen gah? Ngaw my fon lay daw-gaw keuy lah! (Are you crazy? That’s cheaper than I bought it for.)

A. Hey dye yee gaw jop faw po jung gun ga pang lah. (At another grocery store, it’s much cheaper.)

Lesson 4 (Time)

Practice
A. Yee ga hye sup yut deem mm sup bot fun. (Right now it’s 11:58.)

B. Jung yuw boon gaw jung tuw juw fong gung lah. (Another ½ an hour till we get off of work.)

C. Yee ga hye dup chut. (Right now it’s 35 minutes in the hour.)

D. Yut yuut yuw yaa say gaw seew see. (There’s 24 hours in a day.)

Lesson 5 (Calendar)

Practice
A: Ching mun, gum yut hye sing kay gay ah? (May I ask what day is today?)

B: Gum yut hye sing kay som. (Today is Wednesday.)

A: Nay gee mm gee doe gay ho ah? (Do you know what the date is?)

B: Gum yut hye say yuirt chut ho. (Today is April 7th.)

Lesson 6 (Measurement)

Practice
A. Ngaw sic jaw yut woon fon lah. (I had a bowl of rice already.)

B. Keuy jerk gun yut geen som. (S/he’s wearing a shirt.)

C. Lee teew sing ho cherng ah. (This string is very long.)

D. Ngaw joe lee fung gung ho shuir fook ah. (My job is very comfortable/I enjoy my job very much.)

E. Ngaw yut gaw jung tuw cheen hay jaw sun lah. (I woke up an hour ago.)

F-Q. Keuy hay bean do lay gah? (Where is s/he from?)   A. Gawng Dung lay gah. (From Canton)

G. Deem guy nay yeew gum joe leh? (Why do you have to do that?)
