FAHSI Launches $100K College Scholarship Program

Filipino American Human Services, Inc. (FAHSI) announced that it will immediately launch a $100,000 college scholarship program entitled the FAHSI College Scholarship Program (FCSP).  The first scholarship award for the 2008-09 academic term is named after its donors, Frederick and Demi Seguritan.  The program will select one recipient each year for the next five years. The five recipients will each receive up to $5000 per year for four years for a total of $20,000 each.

The scholarship is awarded to one Filipino/Filipino-American graduating high school senior who demonstrates a passion for business and service to the Filipino community.  Applicants living in the tri-state area will be eligible to apply. The applicants must be of Filipino heritage and involved in an organization that serves the Filipino community.  Students must also be able to demonstrate financial need.  The deadline for filing applications for the 2008-2009 school year is June 15, 2008.

The scholarship recipient will be required to maintain at least a 3.5 grade point average each year.  FAHSI must receive copies of the recipient’s transcript after the completion of each semester.  Recipients may receive mentoring from the donors and FAHSI staff and board of directors during their matriculation at a four-year college or university.

Finalists for the program will be chosen in mid-July by a screening panel. The finalists will then meet with an interview panel, which will include the donors.  The 2008-2009 recipient will be announced at the beginning of August.

FAHSI's Executive Director, Johanna Martinez, believes that the program will have a very positive impact in the Filipino community. "We hope that the FAHSI College Scholarship Program will inspire Filipino youth to pursue higher educational opportunities and to give back to the Filipino community," Ms. Martinez said.

Application and program information may be downloaded from FAHSI's website at www.fahsi.org.  Students may also contact Ms. Martinez with any questions about the FCSP or the application process via email at jmartinez@fahsi.org or telephone at (718) 883-1295.

Applications and supporting documents must be mailed to FAHSI, 185-14 Hillside Avenue, Jamaica, NY 11432 or emailed to jmartinez@fahsi.org by June 15th.
